Southern France is the home of the Rhone Valley, Provence, and the Languedoc. The main grape varietals grown in the Southern Rhone, Provence, and Languedoc are Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, usually with a preponderance of Grenache, a full-bodied, high alcohol grape that tastes of cherry liqueur and raspberries. The Northern Rhone valley is home to the greatest expressions of Syrah with villages such as Hermitage, Cote Rotie, and Cornas. Some great values can be found in Cote du Rhone, Coteaux du Languedoc, and many others. |
